“The mothership of motionography that is OneDotZero’s globe-trotting digital arts fest Adventures in Motion, kicks off today at London’s British Film Institute. Now in it’s 13th year (unlucky for some), the event show-cases work “from beyond the frontiers of innovation”. Can’t argue with that! Highlights include interactive, virtual spraypaint Graffonic, and the Citystates 09 program, featuring this charming 60-seconder by Nirm Singh Dhiman.”

Mankind’s fascination with city living continues at a startling pace, accelerating towards nations of super cities. This programme acts as a survey of our feelings, fears and hopes of urban dwelling now and in the future. From personal stories to community collectives, it’s time to investigate how cities are changing and in turn how we are changing our cities. This programme includes Keith Loutit’s stunning film “Mardi Gras”, which uses tilt-shift and time-lapse photography to create the illusion of miniaturization at Sydney’s annual parade.

——-

Spending the day at the BFI, and watching cutting edge eye popping animation films is something that I dont get to do often. I should, I walked away with a ton of inspiration and belief that I should start working on something new and spectacular (rather then just working on starting something new and spectacular).

There are some truly clever and creative people out there. Just to be included within this selection is something that I couldnt quite believe. I certainly didnt think that I was going to end the screening giving advice and autographs!

The fact that the City States ’09 programme was shown on the BFI’s NF1 screen no less, which subsequently housed a special screening of Pixar’s latest and greatest movie, Up, meant that in the grand scheme of things, my little film was truly in exalted animation company.

Located in Rose Yard in the heart of Maidstone’s bustling town centre, Through the Looking Glass complements the launch of the Graham Clarke Gallery at the Hazlitt Art Centre in May 2008.

www.maidstonearts.com/?139,Default

—-

Nirmal Dhiman is a visual artist, illustrator and designer, who likes to make intimate, colourful and multi-faceted narrative drawings and paintings.

In 1996, when a resident in Maidstone, he found an unused diary from 1969. He soon started to make a drawing a day, a process which evolved into a drawing about that day’s experiences.

This project has since formed the core basis of all his work and has grown into a daily ritual. Currently spanning over 14 years/5,000 entries, the visual diaries have become a personal archive of moments, meta-content and ideas.
