An exhibition comprising of works selected from artists and writers based around the brief of 'Indian Independence', showing to coincide with the 60th anniversary of Indian Independence.
The show aims to draw attention to the reciprocal relationship between countries partitioned as a result of Independence and the rest of the World. Whilst a contrast is often drawn between 'India' and the Western world, particularly along the lines of rationality (in the 'West') vs. 'spirituality' (in the 'East').
This show would like to demonstrate that there is no fixed point between East and West, and indeed, between one culture or nation state and another.
Whilst the work contained in INDependent indIA reflects a definite engagement with Indian and Pakistani cultural issues, it is clear that these issues are not stand alone purely 'Indian' concerns, but ones that exist in a reciprocal relationship with the rest of the world.
Deepa Craig, Jeroo Roy and Seemab Gul's artworks and sculptures in the exhibition.
