Komal Madar
Cultural identity forges the field of my enquiry drawing on my own experiences and observations of cultural movement. I examine the relationship I have with the duality of my cultural heritage and the western culture I have grown-up in. My work responds to contemporary social concerns of cultural conflicts and questions people’s preconceptions of the Indian culture as well as my own expectations
I use video performance to express my ideas and depict personal experiences.
The sound within my work is an important element used to evoke a mood/ emotion. [Doli- The send off] has an echoic resonance of the distressed sounds of bangles and rice, which raises questions about people’s own preconceptions of Indian marriage. Sound and movement are vital elements used create work that varies between the extremes of being light hearted and/or having elements of anxiety and hints of eroticism.
