Over the past few decades, SSSL have been making a range of retail, business management, and booking software used by SMBs and their customers

I was hired to instil a UX and Design function, in what had been a Developer-led organisation. I was tasked with leading the company’s new future vision, by architecting their all-new connected eco-system of web products

For 30 years SSSL had been making retail, business management, and booking software used by SMBs and their customers

I was hired to instil a UX and Design function, within a Developer-only software company and assess the current offerings

The MD then tasked me with defining company’s future vision, to replacing existing applications, by architecting an all-new connected eco-system of web products

This let me research, transform, and create 100% of the company’s existing and new offerings

Command Centre

SSSL had separate desktop applications but wanted a modernised way to replace these

I spearheaded 0>1 product development to plan out and design the company's next-generation software from scratch. Here I architected the design of a single web application, that managed to combine and reimagine all functions. I built the designs in HTML and in a small development team we launched the MVP in ReactJS. This became the company’s primary, fully mature and multiple-featured product, used across EMEA.

Retail Till EPOS Redesign

One of SSSL's primary products has been an industry leading specialist retail till software, used over the past few decades by thousands of stores, salons and hotels

I led a UX UI audit to assess their most established product. I distilled the customer feedback and research to discover insights. I then transformed/evolved the global design so all functions would be easier to learn, make it more app-like to use, and operate on new custom ergonomic touchscreen hardware

I led a UX UI audit to assess and improve a long-established retail till with business functions, so it became more app-like, easier to use, and touchscreen-friendly so it could run on custom ergonomic hardware

I synthesised the research to devise Impact/Effort and Design Systems approaches, and redefined the roadmap

The redesign introduced visual and user flow consistency, that surpassed the codebase limitations, and reduced the steep learning curve

The results were an immediate impact on take-up, renewals, easy onboarding, and easier updates

Business Set Up Console

Each business was set up and maintained via complicated database processes that only a few Developers could do

I designed a time-saving web interface that let different departments gain visibility and perform the majority of actions with ease

To replace a complex Developer-only process, I designed an all-new internal platform that gave the various departments an intuitive interface to set up each customer

Here they can administrate each business customers unique set-up, whether they are a single shop, 100-store chain, or based across multiple international locations

I designed a new CRM list optimised for first glance searches. And for each customer profile, I designed a dashboard-like overview, with social media style history timeline

I designed an intuitive CMS that let owners easily change a variety of e-commerce settings, and of course their website appearance

I designed a range of flexible booking software products to fulfill individual business requirements.

To let business easily change the settings directly, I designed an intuitive CMS to configure options such as loyalty, vouchers, coupons, offers, block-bookings, payments, etc - And of course set the branding and imagery used

A complex software had over 150 configuration settings, but even Product Specialists weren't sure on what to adjust

Universal Music Group

UMG wanted to uplift the creativity and effectiveness of their artist websites

Six years of creative, websites, E-commerce, and digital for over 60% of UMG artists, bands and music labels. Based on our bespoke platfrom, this entailed working with artists (up-and-coming, established and global superstars) to create the website and experience they wanted

A large-scale project in the MENA region needed to set up a centralised marketplace that would fit with the logistics environment that was taking shape 

I designed intersecting digital solutions to cover various perspectives; the owner-operator experience, stores for third-party local merchants and ordering + specification tools for the purchasers, as part of a complex bid response 

In globally dispersed consultancy teams, I worked on large-scale and futuristic international projects

Collaborating with consultants, businesses and on-site third-parties, I represented the Design team, and contributed to bid pitch materials 

I looked at perspectives from 3 different user archetypes (owner-operations, third-party merchants and business customers), as well as factoring in on-site logisitics

I designed and built emails for SeaWorld, and these were spotted by the Founder / CEO of MailChimp, who got in touch to write a best practice article on my process

No Claims Insurance Game

The client wanted a light-hearted activity to include in marketing emails, and could be sent to a friend

I designed a top-down view driving game where you could drive around country roads, a suburban town or cityscape. The way to achieve a good time, was to anticipate the randomised hazards to avoid collisions, as these would affect your no-claims bonus, which was rated at the end of the 3rd lap.

Health Arcade Game

The client wanted a fun way to teach which foods were good and which were bad

We designed a simple arcade game presented in a 3D isometric format. The user controls a character that races around the course, littered with both speed-ups and obstacles. The fastest times were recorded on the weekly scoreboard

Visual Diary Drawings

In 1996 I found an unused diary from 1969, I bought it for 10 pence as the paper was so beautiful. I started to draw in it every day and the rest is history

For the past 28 years I have been making a daily drawing that captures the highlights and memorable moments of each day. If parts of a drawing leaks through the page, that also influences the next day's drawing

The current count is approx 10,400 drawings, and it is a personal respository of ideas, colours, writing and paintings. Some of these have been shown in the BBC feature on me, and have been also in exhbitions in the UK and internationally

Destination Direction film

An arts organisation commissioned me to be part of their international film project. I made a short film-animation that describe experiences of a trip from the UK to India

The currator explained to me that he often used my film as the starting film to show, when touring across, the UK. Middle East, Idia and New York

This has also been show in various film festivals, including at the BFI, where I gave a directors talk. This was just before Pixar gave their first showing of Up!

The arts and culture magazine saw it at the OneDotZero film festival and they hailed it as one of two highlights from the entire festival

A Windows application was quite inconvenient to update, as this needed to be done in-person or remotely by technicians

Collaborating with Development, I devised a time-saving process to pre-download installer updates and inform the owner to install when convenient, or book in a technician

Software Preferences

A complex software had over 150 configuration settings, but even Product Specialists weren't sure about what to adjust

I worked with stakeholders to understand each configuration setting. I then used card sorting and UX writing approaches to simplify and redesign this fundamental area

Shop Integration

A complex software and hardware combination needed a better way to top up digital and physical peripherals, which were both external services

Integrating a shop area into the software meant that the effort needed to order top-ups by phone was reduced by having indicators and direct access to order directly within the software.
